We bypassed Thessaloniki, Greece's second city, be it a good or bad decision because neither of us are 'into' cities unless we want to see something specific which grabs our interest. We spent some time going down the motorway as this is the easiest way of clearing a city. Have you ever tried going through a city in a motorhome? It will test both your nerves and your ability to stay out of an argument with your wife .... !
We aimed for the coast near Mt Olympus in the hope of at least getting a picture of it and we needed a Wi-Fi signal, so a campsite was called for. Snoopy the GPS found an open one near the No1 motorway at the town of Korinos on the coast. Suffice to say we did not rate it, the Wi-Fi signal was scratchy but Joan did our washing and we 'serviced' Fifi re water and waste. Never saw Mt Olympus due to cloudy rainy weather - onwards and southwards we went!
Fed up at having paid 34 Euros for the two nights we decided on some free camping again, and along came this lovely beach at Litohoro. It had a Spa resort up the road which had a very good Wi-Fi signal, it was quiet being low season and it had a beach to walk and sit on watching fishermen and whomever else. We stayed two nights!
Monday 14 October saw us criss-crossing the motorway several times as we avoided travelling on it and went through countryside, not always pretty because as was the case in Italy in 2012, they tend to burn stuff this time of year resulting in haze and smoke filled air at times.
I programmed the GPS to take us to Larissa Air Base in central Greece where I know the Greece Air Force has a display of old aircraft. Alas, the display of 10 or so aircraft is inside the base perimeters and access given to the public on 'open base' days only ....
So on to the coast again and this time to Volos. Reaching the outskirts we trundled round the southern edge of town where the large port is located. This took us past a launch area for pleasure craft which had a large concrete area with a grand view of the port and it was a no brainer as to where we would overnight. There were loads of activity inside the port, we had the binoculars out and all was celebrated with a glass of wine.
Ever further south we went the next day with the general aim of Lamia which is northeast of Athens. However, the free stops ain't over yet ....
Stay tuned.

Life's a beach - no not a loo, a changing cubicle.
